Do you remember the days of being able to eat whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted, without seeing any change in what the scale was reporting? Weren’t those the days! So what happened? As time passes, digestive systems take a real beating and many find themselves starting to pack on extra pounds. The good news is, it does not have to stay that way.

Studies have reported that as early as the age of three the stomachs of many children are already in a state of shock from what they are forced to process. While it usually takes a few years for symptoms to appear, the assault started long before.

Besides the affect of unhealthy food choices and chemical ingestion, the stomach and digestive system as a whole is hard-hit from the impact of life’s daily stress. Since our body systems are intertwined, a blow in one area ripples into the others.

As the digestive system becomes impaired in its ability to process all that is sent its way, toxins start to build up in the body. As a survival mechanism the body then starts to gain mass to reduce the percentage of total body toxicity, storing the toxins in the fat cells. This then tends to push people to start dieting, which for many is the beginning of a frustrating loop of weight loss and weight gain – determination and disappointment.

The body really does not care how much it weighs. It is most concerned with how its systems are functioning and will spend its energy coming to the aid of any system working at a sub-optimum level. Since fat loss requires so much energy, there is none available for it if some system is out of order.

So, the key to permanent weight loss is to get to the root of the problem, which for many is going to be getting their stomach out of the state of shock and back to operating at its full potential. While this can take some time, many will see results quickly when they start to provide their bodies with premium fuel: whole foods with live enzymes that the body can easily and readily assimilate for its essential processes.

To adequately provide your body with good nutrition, the whole foods should include a variety of colors and should incorporate different tastes such as bitter, sweet, sour, salty, astringent (cranberries and tea) and pungent (hot, spicy).

Once the body nourishes its systems back to health, it will then have the energy to focus on weight loss. As you nourish your body with nutrient-packed food, it will at some point turn its attention to the removal of the toxins that are stored in the fat. As those toxins are released, the body will shed the fat and you will effortlessly return to your natural healthy weight.

Do not beat yourself up if you have tried dieting and have been unsuccessful; instead turn your attention to finding ways to nourish your body with superior nutrition, then watch what your body will do for you.

Cleansing and detox programs have become very popular in the last few years. A body cleanse can be a process that lasts for just a few days or four weeks — it really depends upon the type of cleanse you are doing and the results you’re trying to get from your cleanse.

Are you cleansing to lose weight? Maybe you want to give your colon and digestive tract a clean slate by removing waste matter and toxins that have built up due to an unhealthy diet. Maybe you want to do a a water only fast to give your digestive system a complete rest. Whatever your reason for cleansing, your body will enjoy the break from your usual regimen and if you do your cleanse right you can really see some great benefits.

A detoxifying cleanse can be done in many different ways.

Here are a few detox cleanses for you to consider:

    “Change your diet” cleanse:
This is the most common and widespread type of cleansing detox. This is where you change your diet and simplify what you eat for a period of time that can be a few days or up to a few weeks. A “change your diet” type of cleanse may mean that you eat only fruit and/or vegetables or another type of cleansing food during the cleanse.

    Fasting cleanse:
Another type of cleanse can involve fasting. Fasting is usually defined as abstaining from food. This type of cleanse usually requires that you take in a lot of fluids and these fluids flush out toxins from your body — especially from your colon and digestive tract. There are “water only” fasts, vegetable juice fasts, fruit juice fasts, smoothie fasts and other types of liquid fasts. Fasting is also one of the fastest ways to lose weight when cleansing.

    Parasite Cleansing:
Some health practitioners believe that a large part of the world’s population is living with harmful organisms or parasites inside their bodies. They say that you can get these organisms by drinking unclean water or eating undercooked meat or by having poor hygiene. To do a parasite cleanse you usually will need to ingest a concoction of black walnut hull, male fern root, clove, wormwood and more. These special blends cause an unpleasant and unlivable environment for the organisms which causes them to depart from your body.

No matter what cleanse you do, it is recommended that you use simple organic ingredients so that you do not bring more toxins into your system that would contradict the healing process you are trying to create with the cleanse.

When you decide to do a cleanse, find one that works in synchronization with your body to cause a natural discharge of poisons and toxins. Your goal at the end of a detox cleanse is to feel refreshed and revitalized and it really is attainable.

    Why Estimate Your Caloric Needs?

To estimate how many calories you should consume in order to maintain your weight, you’ll need to do a little math. By using a simple formula called the Harris-Benedict principle, you can assess your basal metabolic rate — also known as your BMR.

(Then, to lose weight, you’ll need to cut calories or burn extra calories and shoot for a level lower than the results you get with this formula.)

    Calculate Your BMR
Your BMR is the amount of energy your body needs to function. We use about 60% of the calories we consume each day for basic bodily functions such as breathing.

Other factors that influence your BMR are height, weight, age and sex.

Step one is to calculate your BMR with the following formula:

    Women:
    655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years)

    Men:
    66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age in years)

Please note that this formula applies only to adults.

    Calculate Activity
Step two: In order to incorporate activity into your daily caloric needs, do the following calculation:

    * If you are sedentary : BMR x 20 percent

    * If you are lightly active: BMR x 30 percent

    * If you are moderately active (You exercise most days a week.): BMR x 40 percent

    * If you are very active (You exercise intensely on a daily basis or for prolonged periods.): BMR x 50 percent

    * If you are extra active (You do hard labor or are in athletic training.): BMR x 60 percent

Add this number to your BMR.

The result of this formula will be the number of calories you can eat every day and maintain your current weightt. In order to lose weight, you’ll need to take in fewer calories than this result.

As you lose weight, you can re-calculate the formula to assess your new BMR.
